Is IBC a Scam? Here's What Reddit Gets Wrong (And Why It Matters)

Every single thing typed about IBC on Reddit is wrong.

Okay, almost every single thing. But the confident incorrectness is remarkable. "It's expensive." "It's only for the rich." "It's complex." "It doesn't work." "It's a scam."

Let's run through these.

"IBC Is Expensive"

Relative to what?

Term insurance is cheaper — for a reason. It provides pure death protection and builds zero cash value. You pay the premium, and if you outlive the term, the insurance company keeps every dollar.

A whole life policy designed for IBC is more expensive per dollar of death benefit. But the comparison is wrong. You're not buying more death benefit. You're buying a cash value accumulation vehicle with a death benefit attached.

The relevant cost comparison isn't "whole life vs. term." It's "whole life vs. what else would I do with this money?" and "what does the cash value provide that other options don't?"

"It's Only for the Rich"

This one has a kernel of truth that gets distorted.

IBC works best for people with consistent income who can fund the policy meaningfully. You can start a policy with a relatively modest premium — the "minimum viable policy" varies by company and design.

Where it becomes less useful is for people who can't sustain the premium or who need every dollar liquid. That's not "only the rich." That's a specific fit question.

"It Doesn't Work"

The people who say this typically either: (a) owned a poorly designed policy that wasn't structured for IBC, or (b) took loans and never repaid them, or (c) bought into the strategy expecting market returns.

IBC works for what it does. It doesn't do what a stock portfolio does. It does what a banking system does — accessible, guaranteed, tax-advantaged accumulation that you can borrow against and repay.

If you want it to do something else, you'll be disappointed.

The Columbo Method

David's approach to Reddit critics: ask two questions.

"What do you mean by that?"

"How did you arrive at that conclusion?"

Most critics can't answer the second question. They heard it somewhere. They read a Reddit post. They watched a YouTube video from someone equally uninformed.

The Columbo method exposes the difference between an opinion and an analysis. IBC deserves actual analysis, not recycled skepticism.
