When Your Net Worth Lies to You: The Illusion of Wealthy on Paper

Net worth is a story you tell yourself.

It feels real. The number is real. But if you can't access it, it might as well be written in invisible ink.

The retired Air Force captain Paul worked with had a strong net worth: retirement accounts, home equity, solid income history. On paper, he was doing well. In practice, when he needed seed capital to launch his trucking business, he was stuck.

His net worth was real. His liquidity was zero.

The Two Flavors of Wealth

There's wealth you can see and wealth you can use. Most financial planning focuses on the first kind.

The 401(k) balance your advisor shows you at your annual review — that's visible wealth. It looks great. But access it before 59½ and you pay a 10% penalty plus ordinary income tax. Access it at the wrong time and you could be selling into a down market. Ask your employer about a loan and discover the plan doesn't allow it.

Home equity tells a similar story. Appreciating nicely, probably. But to access it, you need a bank's permission, an appraisal, and time. None of those are available on the day a deal closes.

What Usable Wealth Looks Like

An IBC policy builds a different kind of asset: one that's both growing and accessible simultaneously.

The cash value grows according to the policy's guaranteed rate (plus any non-guaranteed dividends). And at any point, you can call and have a check within days — no credit check, no approval, no market timing concern.

That's usable wealth. The kind that lets you say yes when opportunity shows up.

The Pilot's Lesson

The Air Force captain eventually got his capital — from Paul and David, who had IBC policies with accessible cash value. The lesson isn't that he was bad with money. He did everything the mainstream financial world told him to do.

The lesson is that the mainstream playbook optimizes for visible wealth. IBC optimizes for usable wealth.

Most people don't realize the difference until they need the money and can't get it.
